An Alliance with the Huron Empire

An Alliance with the Huron Empire

Please answer each question carefully. There are 8 questions in total. The Hurons were a group of First Nations people who were in an alliance with Champlain. They were closely related to the Iroquois, but had become their enemies.

1. What is an alliance? What does this word mean?

From i see, an alliance is to make a agreement, to get together to face some situation. In the dictionary An alliance is a group of countries or political parties that are formally united and working together because they have similar aims. An alliance also is a relationship in which two countries, political parties, or organizations work together for some purpose.

Great traders themselves, the Hurons navigated the rivers of Central Canada and were very prosperous. They would become the leading source of furs for the French.

2. Why would Champlain want to form an alliance with the Hurons?

I think that he wanted the better profits from the North American colonies. The French did very good at the trade and technology. If they form an alliance with the Hurons ,they will have a mammoth advantage in transport and trade. As we all know, there were millions of unfair trade between the Native people and European. As a french, they will get a lot of goods and treasures during the trade.Getting on will with the Hurons is the the major premise for the cheap transport and mammoth profit of trade.

3. This is a picture of Champlain and his Huron allies on the left fighting the Iroquois. This is one of the earliest images of Europeans and First Nations people interacting.

a. Explain what you see in the picture in 3-5 sentences. Look carefully at the picture.

Guns vs arrows?Who will be the winner?Every time when we see the ten thousand arrows shot at once, we always join the tragedy of dog-eat-dog.Looks like that some people really wish to wing one's way home.Boats bloomed on the water, trees were waiting, but we all know the end already, it must be the internecine.

b. Do you think this is a realistic image of the situation? Explain why or why not in 5-8 sentences.

It is not very realistic, at least from i see.Although there do have an alliance with the Hurons and French, but three guns and millions of arrow? It is too unfair!I do not think that Hurons will agree with that. From this picture, we can find out that french is just symbolic join the war. Will the Hurons let those his brother to join and be killed? No one wants to die!

4. The Hurons had many economic advantages because of their geographic location and territory. They were located on the southern shore of Georgian Bay, where the fishing was excellent.

a. Find a map of Georgian Bay. Explain where this bay is.

The Georgian Bay,from the little current, to killarney.Go through the key inlet, Byng to Parry sound. This bay is beside the Lake Huron. It also near the North Charnel. The Georgian Bay also has the coast of the land, Midland, ONT.

b. Translate the word bay.

From i see, a bay is a kind of cove.Just like gulf,or bight.Search on google. In the dictionary, a bay is a part of a coast where the land curves inwards.

5 . Find a photograph of Georgian Bay that you like.

Explain why you like it in 3-5 sentences.
The vegetation of this region includes mixed forests, meadows, and fields. The sandy soil was perfect for planting corn, squash, pumpkins, and beans.

Looking into the picture, you may never want to out.sea running to the sky, turning green to the blue.Singing the songs while cleaning the rock. For millions of year?To be the old man in the painting, sitting like a sculpture. What is he looking for?A white seagull flying through the Sea level, or a ragged ship which will take his family home, we will never know. The painter seems put all his secrets into the deep sea, without the beauty of Georgian bay.Wait ,that is not true, because Georgian bay's beauty has never been a secrets.

6. Take a look at this piece of Canadian Art called "Stormy Weather". The artist is Frederick Varley. He illustrated the stormy weather of Georgian Bay.a. How do you feel when you see this painting? Explain in 5-8 sentences. Tell me why you feel that way.

Simple dominant color, but despair mood.Blue, green, white, somehow, the color which the painter used are all very cold, the wind blow from the right to the left, pushing the water, pushing the tree, bring the information of storm.A little orange, symbolized the little sunshine which still fighting? That is never help. The sky, the sea, and the rock are covered by the same colors, but little feel about dull or unclear, i just full in love with this work right now.It is amazing!

7. This is a poem by A.J.M Smith. It was put together with this image on a past provincial exam.a. When you read this poem, how do you feel about the Canadian landscape? Explain in 10-12 sentences. Think deep and be creative.

The Lonely LandA.J.M. Smith
Cedar and jagged fir
uplift sharp barbs
against the gray
and cloud-piled sky;
and in the bay
blown spume and windrift
and thin, bitter spray
snap
at the whirling sky;
and the pine trees
lean one way.
A wild duck calls
to her mate,
and ragged
and passionate tones
stagger and fall,
and recover,
and stagger and fall,
on these stones -
are lost
in the lapping of water
on smooth, flat stones.
This is a beauty
of dissonance,
this resonance
of stony strand,
this smoky cry
curled over a black pine
like a broken
and wind-battered branch
when the wind
bends the tops of the pine
like a broken
and wind-battered branch
when the wind
bends the tops of the pines
and curdles the sky
from the north.
This is the beauty
of strength
broken by strength
and still strong

At the first time when i read this poem, i thought it is full of sadness. The lonely land--we can feel it just from the title. Cedar and jagged fir--some plants that spend their winter cold time along. Those beautiful little things want to against sky?Is that too powerless? Those trees just do not know their own limitations or want a little poor self-respect?Somehow, what they will get at the end is just the sharp barbs.Snapping at the whirling sky, what we can blame? There do have something we can never against.Through away the green trees, watching another beautiful show from nature--the wild duck calls--another powerless show.Their calls stagger and fall, stagger and fall, lost in the nature.Despair, but what can help?Still the same rules, something we can not against. But face those thing that we can not against, face the real power, those beauty still chose to cry, to broke,to against ,even thought they are powerless, no matter what they will get.The strong heart of them be shown suddenly. Is that a real lonely land?I have no idea, but is those plants and animals really powerless? No,i those beauty of strength broken by strength and still strong. It is a poem that full of power!

EXPLORATION CAN CREATE CONFLICT AND MISUNDERSTANDING

Topic: Exploration can create conflict and misunderstanding
Title:When I Was A Sailor
Jessica,Wang

_____“Blue sky rising, carry me forever, southern light guide me on my journey… A new world discovered, like a waiting lover, willing to fulfil a fantasy…“ I was a sailor when I was young. To explore, to find treasures, to give people a better life by sitting with Poseidon on his golden cart, that is used to be my dream, but all the beauties disappeared at that day. The day which is the first time I found a land, I faced a fight because of that exploration, after running out of the disaster I have never set my foot on the deck of the ship again.
_____I can remember clearly every details of the day that we found the new land. It was a rainy day, the gulls were crying, and the white foam was flying. We had drifted on the sea for a long time. Eating the hope of find treasures and the belief of the exploration had already could not stop the hungry missing of home in people's heart. After lunch, I talked with other sailors in our small dirty room. Obviously, they all expected to return to the down-to-earth’s life.
"Who are we working for?" Jason asked, he is a lovely boy, just like me at that time.
"The king..."Tom answered, he is about 40 or 50 years old, a very bold man, I like him very much .
"What is his name?"
"Come on, Jase, who knows? I mean, who care?"
"Right, to find the land, bring treasures back, and gets some, is the most important thing."
"Then we can back to home, I can see my wife at that time, and my little girl, Susan." Tom said, a smile bloomed on his face, full of gentle.
"Wish we can back before the Christmas."
No one said anything else, suddenly, the room was quiet, I could even hear the sound of wind to dash against the desks. Every one fell into the memories about their sweet family. Everyone except me, I was not as same as them, I came here not for the king which I even do not know his name, or the money that can support my family, I was a 20-year-old boy who came there for my dream, for my belief--the exploration. I wanted to be a navigator when I even could not spell that word. I just put the paper boats into the sea, dreamed one day, I could go to explore, to find goods, to collect lands, to give people a better life. From I see, at that time, exploration is the most beautiful thing in the world. Now, as a sailor, I finally have a chance to make my dream to come true." A land! We find land!" someone was shouting. Without thinking we went out. Land! It is true! We find a land! Although because of the fog, we could not see it clearly, but golden beach, green trees. It is a land! I even could not describe how happy I was. Ship hugged the beach, we jumped into sand like a happy bird, singing and dancing.
_____Then, we met some people, native people. Looking into their eyes, I could perceive their panic. I can still remember it now, totally lost. They did not know what to do. Whispering and whispering, gradually, the fear in their eyes became anger. An old person finally opened his mouse, moved his lips, he said something to us .Unfortunately, no one knew what he was talking about, it sounds like a language, it must be a kind of language, because after he said, all the native people around him repeated his least sentence. I did not know what it mean, but by seeing the women hold children in the arm, hided behind the men, by seeing the men's hands grasped the spears and waved, I knew it must be unfriendly, they wanted to fight? But why? Looking follow their eyes, I found out the answer--some of us had already hold their guns. Metals were flashing under the sunshine, it was so dazzling that I had no idea what I should do, in fact, no one knew. "Damn! What are you doing! "Our captain shouted to the sailors who hold their guns." Put them away!" Those cowards were trembling, they put guns on the nearest place that around them. We all smiled to the native people, knowing that we can not use language to converse, so we tried to show our friendly by smiles. As a response, their chieftain shouted to us. I did not know what that mean, maybe that just a way to show friendly from them? I would never know, because, for his reaction, a coward shot. I knew the disaster was coming.
_____All of the native people roared, we were running, wanted to go back to the ship. Listening to the sound of wind around my ears, I also heard the painful yell, and the blood oozing out .Fire was burning into the horizon, that was a completely nightmare. Running without turning my head, shooting without looking at, I even do not know how I got back to the ship, I even do not want to know. I went back to my home finally, but I also know that Tom had never seen his wife or daughter again, and Jason could not hear ‘merry Christmas’ any more. I am one of the survivors of that exploration, but as same as other survivors, I prefer that I am not alive, death maybe easier. At that time, every night when I closed my eyes, I can saw helpless expression in my comrade-in-arms ' eyes, full of despair. ” help, help...”their hoarse sounds like the shrill song, hurt my ear drum. Every night at that time, I struggled to wake up, and then, tears converged into a river. I finally realized that exploration is not as beautiful as I thought. To find goods? To collect lands? To give a better life? They all build on millions of people‘s corpses. Exploration can create conflict and misunderstanding. From that time, I have never set my foot on the deck of the ship again.
_____Is that cowardly or just the right that people want to protect themselves? Is develop equal to bleed? Is that just the rules for exploration, or the human nature? Is the lack of communication the only object that should be blame? I have no ideas. What is the real face of exploration which being my belief for such a long time? What is the real face of mankind? I can not find the truth out, or I afraid off? At least, I am happy for that I am just an old person who watches the sun rise and set on horizon day by day, now.

Introduction:I was a sailor when i was young. To exploration, to find treasure with my brothers. That used be my dream.Until a day which is the first time I found a land, I faced a fight because of that exploration, after running out of the disaster I have never set my foot on the deck of the ship again.
Rising Action: I remember clearly every details of the day that we find the new land. It was a rainy day.(describe the weather and the sea.) We had drifted on the sea for a long time.I talked with other sailors ,they all expected to return to the down-to-earth life, except me.The exploration is my belief.I wanted to be a navigator when i even can not spell the word.(Day by day ,i just put the paper boats into the sea...describe how i love it ...how it be my dream...what exploration like , from i see. helpful, give people a better life...)"Land!we find land!"someone shouting the outside. (how exciting, happy)We went out.(describe the land...very far, fog, green, tree) Ship hug the beach, we jumped into sand.(how happy).
Climax: We met Native people. Looking in their eyes , I can perceived their panic. Whispering and whispering, then, the fear in their eyes became anger, gradually,an old person of them said something to us .Unfortunately, no one know what he talking about, but i knew it must be unfriendly, they wanted to fight? But why?Looking follow their eyes, i found out the answer--Some of us had already hold their guns. Our captain shouted to the sailor who hold their guns ,let them to put them down. We all smiled to native people, tried to show our friendly .As a response, their chieftain shouted to us.I did not know what that mean,is that just a way that he tried to show his friendly?I would never know, because for his reaction,a coward shot.I knew the disaster was coming.
Falling action: All of the native people roared ,we were running ,wanted to back to the ship. Many people died, I am one of the survivors of that exploration, but as same as other survivors, we even wish we are not alive, death maybe easier.I had a hard time.I realized that exploration can create conflict and misunderstanding. It is not as beautiful as i thought.
Conclusion:Is that selfish or just the right that people want to protect themselves? Is develop equal to bleed? Is that just the rules for exploration, or the human nature? Is the lack of communication the only object that blamable?I have no ideas. What is the real face of exploration which being my belief for a long time? What is the real face of mankind?I can not find the truth out, or i afraid off?At least ,i am happy for that i am just a old person who watch the sun rise and set on horizon day by day , now.

What You Think is What You See

What You Think is What You See(Adapted from your textbook)
The people who believed the earth is flat had a perception of the world that is different from reality. Have you ever noticed when people believe something, that is all they can see? For example, if you are looking at a cloud and your friend thinks they see a dog, all of a sudden you can see one too! This is because of the human trait perception.
How you see the world is based on your background knowledge (what you know before), biases, and even the recent suggestions made to you by the world around you.How does this relate to explorers and the Northwest Passage?
Background Knowledge. The Europeans had no firm background knowledge about North America. Nobody really knew what it looked like or how big it was. Therefore, it was possible the Northwest Passage could exist because nobody said it didn't.
Bias. The European explorers and monarch were biased in favour of the Northwest Passage because it suited their agenda and it matched with their goals.
Immediate SuggestionsMaps during this time showed the Northwest Passage existed. The dream of this passage would be gone when the reality of geography was found out. It was very hard for these explorers to believe the Northwest passage didn't exist. In other words, there was a kind of feedback loop of false information. Maps that were wrong made people perceive there was a Northwest Passage to China.
Look at page 225 of your textbook to find out what a feedback loop looks like.
Questions
Answer each question in 3-5 sentences.
1. If the maps around you showed the existence of the Northwest Passage, would you believe it? Why?
I am pretty sure that i will believe it.Every one think so, every one says that, every map shows it, so why i will not believe ?People all says that what you see is the truth, i see the map!All things show me that the existence of the Northwest Passage, so i will believe.

2. If you were John Cabot and someone told you the Northwest Passage didn't exist. What would you say? What would you feel? How would you react?
If i am the John Cabot, the react may be different.I do not think that i will believe it.I am a navigator. The passage is the way which should be discovered by a navigator like me. I do not need somebody tell me if it is real or not.I will not feel very happy when people say that, because they deny my believe, but i will not care too much about what they said. I will told them that as a navigator, i will find it out by myself. Let the truth to tell them.

3. Find a map by Humphrey Gilbert from 1582. What do you see in the picture? Explain.

http://www.gavinmenzies.net/assets/images/maps/SirHumphreyGilbertmap.jpg
Red ink , white paper,a map about earth?I do not understand what exactly it shows.it seems like a vertical view picture of the earth.I guess it may draw by Humphrey Gilbert from 1582. At least when i put those words in google, it is shown.
4. Why did the Northwest Passage suit the goals (agenda) of the European explorers and monarchs?
It is useful. It may can help them to find North America, for i guess, although they are attracted by Asia's goods.Anyway Northwest passage can improve the connections, trades. It is useful for people and countries.
5. Feedback loops help us to see reality as a system. Can you think of an example of a feedback loop from your own life? Look at page 225 of your textbook to help you
If there are no animals like rabbits any more, then wolfs will die because there are no foods. If there are no animals like wolfs any more, then there will be too much rabbits , they will eat many grass, but there are no too much grass, they will die because of they do not have foods finally.
6. What did you learn so far about explorers and the colonization of Canada?
I learned a lot about the explorers and the colonization.I learned the experience about Cabot ,Cartier.I learned that how Canada(NEW FOUND LAND )were found .I also learned about fur trade, knew how it works.

Flat Earth

By now you have read that many European explorers, beginning with John Cabot, were convinced of the existence of a Northwest Passage to China. They and their governments had good reasons to believe this theory.Groups like the Flat Earth Society - people who say the Earth is flat - believe it is is still flat even when there is photographic evidence from space.Your TaskPlease post into a new entry. Use 8-12 sentences for each question for FULL marks.

1. Find two pictures showing the earth is flat. Explain what you see in EACH picture in 8-12 sentences.

This is a picture talks about the flat earth. With the perspective of universe,a flat land in the center of this picture. There are many mountains ,lakes ,and grass on the ground.A compass sky are on the top of that ground. There is a moon on the left of the flat earth. On the right hand, there are lights,it seems like the rising sun.The sky and ground are connect. There are also something interesting in this picture, the other planets all are sphere.I do not know why.If the author know planets are sphere, then why the earth is flat?

The end of the world. That is the first thought i had when i saw this picture. It also talks about the flat earth. The water end, and fly down in this picture. The ship seems will drop drown. On the background of the cloud blooms on the cold sky everything give me the feel of despair .On the flat earth, we can reach the end of the world. Is that means in the real earth, we will not reach the end?

2. Imagine you are a person who believes the earth is still flat today. What are 5 reasons to support your argument that it is still flat?
1.we can not see the earth is sphere by using our eyes.
2.By using our eyes, we see the ground is flat .
3.our ancestors all think that the earth is flat , and they made lots of miracles that we can not do this time.
4.we can not feel the earth is sphere.
5.If the north pole is the center of the earth, the south pole is the boundary, then lots of thing still make science, that is why no one fell into the end of earth.

3. Do you think human beings have a false concept of the earth and the universe today?
I think it is possible, both nature and universe have mammoth power.we all are a little tinny things of them, it is hard to discover them, and it is also possible that what we think today, is a joke from them, or from ourselves.

Exploration

We have learned about two different explorers from different countries. Now, it is time to think about exploration. Use what you have learned from these important historical people and think about the idea of exploring. You are going to be writing an essay very soon in Canadian Studies, but you are going to first think about the topics.

Topics1. Exploration is important for countries.

2. Exploration can create conflict and misunderstanding.

Your job today:
Can you find three different pictures to show how exploration is important for countries? Explain each one carefully in 5-8 sentences. Each picture should show a different perspective on why exploration is important.Remember to record where you got your picture.

Exploration is very important for countries. Why?look at this map.Look at a map of world.None lands was drawn on them without exploration. The exploration is important for countries, because it can help to find some new lands. For instance,Jacques Cartier claimed what is now Canada for France.John Cabot also discovered the “New Founde Landes” which now is know as Newfoundland for England. In another word, the exploration can always collect lands for the country. The land is a symbol of powerful and prosperous of a country, so the exploration which can help to find lands is very important for countries.

The is a picture about fair trade.By learning 'fur trade',i suddenly realized that fair trade is very useful for a country. Both sides of people in a trade can get what they want. For example, the European find North American people by exploration, they doing trade. They use some tools that they have so much or they do not need to trade furs. They can sell furs on anther place to get more money,so that they can have a better life.Once the people of the country get a good life, the country must be very strong. For this reason, the exploration is important for countries because it can lead the prosperous of trade.

This is a treasure map.The point i want to show is exploration is very important to countries because it can always give countries goods and treasure.John Cabot reached Newfoundland's Grand Banks by exploration , and he bring cods for his country. This is a good example for this point. When we explore, we always find something that is useful, that can make our life better, that can give our country power, make it more prosperous. That is why exploration is important for counties.

WHAT A TRAGEDY!FUR TRADE!

This is a very colorful picture that i found in
http://cache.eb.com/eb/image?id=91554&rendTypeId=4 .
There are total 4 people in the picture. All of them are in the place that called trading posts. It seems that they are having a trade of animals' fur.The Native Americans always use furs to trade some tools. In this picture, the Native people is using furs to trade a gun(It seems like a gun).At the moment that the picture shows, all of the men are checking what they got from this business, they must check carefully. It seems that trade is very important to them.In addition thought.I think the native is a hunter,he will use the gun that he traded to kill more animals ,so that he can use their furs to trade more useful tools to make his life more comfortable.

I found this beautiful picture on http://www.aoc.gov/images/fur.jpg.
There are 3 people on this picture. Two of them are trading .They use the gun to trade fur.The other person is sitting and waiting for her husband(I think they are couple.).There are also a dog and some boxes around her,she is sitting in one of the boxes. The woman looks not very happy,in fact , she looks helpless.I think she may like the fur which her husband trade very much,or she dose not like killing animals, but they have to do this for live. They maybe very poor, whatever the reason of getting a gun is to protect them ,to hunt some foods , or to get more furs ,whatever it is . It must be very useful, so they traded.Anyway, the background of this picture is very beautiful. There are many totem poles and snow.I think it many be Canada.

It is a beautiful picture that is drawn by pencil.
The Fur Trade in North America began with the earliest contacts between the Iroquois and Europeans. That is also what this picture talks about. There are some Iroquois in this picture, they are holding some furs. There are also some Europeans are standing in front of them.It seems that they will have a fur trade.Something important is showed by this picture that i think is the Iroquois looks not very happy. Both the man and woman all looks very tired and hopeless.I do not think that they are happy to have this trade, but they have to.

The picture shows the setting of trading posts. There are some north American people in the picture.A native people gave his furs to a man .They are trading .The man 's wife and his child also are standing behind him.It seems that this trade is very important to their family, i think maybe trading fur is the only way that they use to get money or something can make their life better. There are also a man standing in the picture who is holding two gooses,he is also waiting for trading. There are something interesting is the man's child is not looking at the trading, he is looking at the animals.I think it shows the human nature--we love animals, we do love them, from our heart, from the inside, when we are young. When we grow up, we learned something that let us give up what we like, to use them to trade for a better life.We think more about ourselves, we begin to careless about other person's thought. We can use their life to trade our happiness! What a tragedy!

It is a comics, it should let people feel funny, feel relaxed, but i do not have the feeling like that.In fact ,i feel sad, very sad. This picture shows a story that happened in the zoo. There are a woman who is wearing a beautiful clothes that made by leopard skin. She is walking through the cage of leopards. All the leopards are bray. They looks angry and sad.It is also what i feel.It is an irony! What do you feel when you see your brother's skin is worn by others?!Is it not bad enough that kept by people in cages?!Is it not bad enough that played by people day by day until your died?!
We all be made by nature! We are family!what a tragedy!fur trade!

i learn a lot this week.actually, every week i learn a lot, but there r still something special.
we learned the literary essay on ms.Chan's class. it is very useful, and it is also very important for our Provencal exam, but i do not think i grasp it clearly, i also did not get a very good mark on it.every time, when i fought with it, i was defeated...it makes me feel sooooooooooo sad, but i believe that one day i will win if i try harder.
i join the SBSMUN this week, but just for fun. i help a student who in grade 12 to find some info about India. it lets me learn many things, not only about the country but also the UN. i feel very happy when i learning this.helping people also makes me happy.wish we can do a awesome job!
there is one thing that makes me feel very happy is the real spring is coming!i finally feel the warm wind's touch, i finally smell the fragrance of the flower,i finally hear the birds sing their songs.i love spring!it also remains me about the time that i was in middle school.when spring came, i usually played on the playground with my old friends .that made me feel so good!i miss them so much!wish i can see them soon.
